Hello world. It’s walt.id

This is our first official blog post and we are already excited to share more about us and our work in the future.

But first things first …

Why are we here?

We have been working on Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) for a few years and if experience has told us one thing it is this: Building an identity layer for the digital world is a hard thing to do

SSI is not easy. It is a set of complex new technologies and we’re still early. Yet, SSI is inevitable, because it enables and ties into a fundamental shift that is already changing how the digital world works: the shift from data silos to data ecosystems.

Today, we are witnessing the emergence of decentralised systems that are reshaping the way we model identity and establish trust. These systems do not only work for everyone on equal terms but are also more resilient, secure, scalable, reliable, faster and cheaper than existing alternatives, simply because there is no single organisation that can monopolise control, siphon off value and abuse its power.

It is our goal to make SSI simple and accessible: to enable every developer and organisation to build identity and trust into the web and their applications. Ultimately, this will transform every digital interaction into an effortless and worry-free experience.

Our Approach.

#1 We believe the future of software is open source. That is why we are publishing all our products under the permissive Apache 2 license. In other words: Anyone can use our software free of charge and without strings attached.

#2 We believe that developers are the key to driving any large scale shift - including the shift from data silos to ecosystems. It is the builders who determine the success of one paradigm (e.g. SSI) over another (e.g. centralised/federated ID). That is why we are striving to nail the developer experience of products - from documentation to complexity abstraction and composability to support and services.

#3 SSI is ultimately about building identity ecosystems which function like multi-sided marketplaces, i.e. you need data sources (Issuers), data controllers (Holders) and data consumers (Verifiers). Supporting the right ecosystems early and helping them to reach the critical mass of participants is crucial for SSI’s success. We believe that Europe has the potential to become a global leader in SSI for various reasons - including strong public sector engagement, existing and emerging regulatory frameworks and accelerating traction in the private sector across industries.
